Inocência © Felipe Kaizer
This typeface was started as an exercise during a course taught by Eduardo Berliner (MA in Typeface Design by the University of Reading), while I was still in college. By the end of the second month, we had to type the word 'hamburgevios' using our own text typeface. This sounds quite simple, but it was actually a big challenge for people who had never got deeply in touch with typography before.
I worked very hard on that, and kept developing the font after the course finished; I spent about one year designing the rest of the lowercase, punctuation, numerals, uppercase and so on, until the regular font was almost complete (go to the bottom of the page to take a look at the supported languages until now).
So, what was an exercise at first, turned into a personal commitment after some months. The typeface slowly became alive through some other projects:
> Bendita Palavra Maldita;
> Design Ex Machina;
> Thiago Monteiro's BA Thesis;
> Design PUC-Rio 2007 : Projetos Selecionados / Selected Projects;
> Saga Lusa – Adriana Calcanhotto;
> &c.
Inocência means innocence; considering that it was my first step into type design, I find it very meaningful to present the learning and working process every year to the college freshmen, not only as a way to introduce the main issues in text type design and typography, but also to talk about motivation and long term projects.
