Bendita Palavra Maldita
When I was still working at Tecnopop, Chacal – the poet –, contacted the office for some advertising material for this next event headed by him. Eight people, including poets and philoshophers, would perform, recite and talk along during four days. At the first meeting, Chacal asked us to design a brochure, but me and my friend João Doria immediatly thought of doing a different thing. We proposed 'something' that would work not only as 'brochure', but also as a poster.
Also at this first meeting I remember that Chacal brought some of the old stuff he produced. Usually one-color xerox prints, manually composed, with no binding or staples; the papers were just folded as many times as necessary, almost without caring about the print image and text compositions. We found that material very interessing and significant for our own project.
Then, it was a two days job. João convinced me to release my first typeface Inocência for use on our work. I warned him it didn't had uppercase or numerals by then. “No problem”. So we just used Adobe Garamond when those characters were necessary. And well, in the given context I think was a perfect decision - mixing the other typeface with my own - because the mix remained subtle enough for reading although reminded Chacal's raw typographic compositions a little. It was the first Inocência's offset print.
We decided to use one of the two most common large paper formats, the 660 × 960mm, as if we haven't thought about it too much. "It should be careless". I think we not even used print marks, because we didn't expected any paper cut. The image on the poster side was handmade, in 1:1 scale, then scanned and desaturated. We used ink and prints from the low resolutions images sent by Chacal to draw and make the collage.
At the night of the printing, when we were there by the machines and the technicians, we noticed a text error. Then we found a way to download my typeface into their computer, so we could open the pdf file and edit it. Too bad: later, we not only came to know that the name of the band Qinho & Os Cara wasn't mistyped, but also that their computer was unable to recognize the font and ended up setting two characters in Courier New. The moment we saw this we immediately approved the result and said it was ready for press. Another welcomed mistake.
